A groundbreaking study published in Nature Metabolism has uncovered a mechanism linking prolactin, estrogen, and brain activity to metabolic changes during lactation. Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and Pennington Biomedical Research Center explored how hormonal fluctuations drive adaptations in nursing mothers. During lactation, significant hormonal shifts occur as estrogen levels decrease while prolactin increases. The study focused on estrogen receptor α (ERα) neurons located in the hypothalamus, which play a crucial role in regulating metabolism during this period.
