Unveiling of Southeastern Oklahoma State University's New Football Stadium Plans
2025-03-13

Southeastern Oklahoma State University (SOSU) in Durant has revealed its ambitious plans for a state-of-the-art football stadium, marking a significant milestone in the university’s athletic history. The project aims to replace the existing Paul Laird Field, which has been hosting the Southeastern Savage Storm and Durant Lions teams since 1939. After decades of successful football seasons, including 17 conference championships, the university is set to embark on an exciting new chapter. Athletic Director Keith Baxter expressed immense enthusiasm about the development, highlighting how quickly the idea has transformed from mere discussions into concrete plans. The new facility will feature advanced amenities, symbolizing the community's enduring passion for football and fostering continued unity among fans.

The unveiling ceremony took place at Bloomer Sullivan Arena, where detailed blueprints of the upcoming stadium were presented. Among the highlights is a new seating area and a three-story press box dedicated to John Massey, father of First United Bank CEO Greg Massey. John has been an avid supporter of both teams since the 1950s, first as a player and later as an alumnus. Greg Massey emphasized the significance of honoring his father’s legacy through this donation, stating that it would be a fitting tribute to someone who held the school dear to his heart. The press box will stand as a testament to John’s lifelong dedication to the sport and the institution.

President Dr. Thomas Newsom shared his vision for the new stadium, noting that it represents more than just a sports venue. Over the past five years, the university has recognized the role of such facilities in building a strong sense of community. "We can feel it, we can taste it," he remarked, expressing optimism that the new stadium will continue to bring people together in the same spirit as its predecessor. The university hopes to achieve this by creating a space where traditions are celebrated and new memories are made.

In addition to the press box and seating area, other enhancements like a new turf playing surface will be installed before the 2025 season. Construction on the 'Spend Life Wisely' Stadium is scheduled to commence after the 2026 football season and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2027. This timeline reflects the university’s commitment to providing top-tier facilities while ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing activities. As the project progresses, anticipation builds for the day when players and fans alike will gather in this new landmark, continuing the proud tradition of football excellence in Durant.
