On a momentous Wednesday, the Utah Capitol welcomed the Brigham Young University (BYU) football team to commemorate their outstanding 2024 season. The event also served as a tribute to Athletic Director Tom Holmoe, who is set to retire after an illustrious career. The team, along with Coach Kalani Sitake, President C. Shane Reese, and mascot Cosmo the Cougar, entered the Senate chamber with the Alamo Bowl trophy in hand.
A significant highlight of the day was the official citation introduced by Senator Kirk Cullimore, which acknowledged the football team for their excellence in athletics, sportsmanship, and community leadership. This recognition was signed by key legislative figures including Senate President Stuart Adams and House Speaker Mike Schultz. Another citation honored Holmoe for his transformative impact on BYU athletics, noting how he elevated the university's sports programs to unprecedented heights during his tenure. Under his leadership, BYU achieved four national championships, numerous conference titles, and produced over 350 All-America student-athletes.
The visit culminated in a heartfelt ceremony where Governor Spencer Cox declared the day "Tom Holmoe Day" in Utah. Speakers included quarterback Jake Retzlaff, who praised Holmoe for being a mentor and friend, and Coach Sitake, who spoke about the enduring friendship and guidance Holmoe provided. President Reese highlighted Holmoe’s dedication and Christlike leadership, while Governor Cox commended him for navigating challenging times in college athletics with integrity and grace.
Holmoe concluded the event by reflecting on his journey from a California native to a proud citizen of Utah. He emphasized that the true highlight of his career was not the titles or accolades but the people he encountered at BYU and throughout the state. His final message encouraged everyone to focus on blessing others' lives, underscoring the importance of community and service. This celebration not only honored past achievements but also inspired future generations to strive for excellence and uphold the values of teamwork and leadership.
