This state-of-the-art complex is set to become a hub for basketball and volleyball excellence, offering top-notch facilities and opportunities for the student-athletes.

Unlock the Potential of UTSA's Sports with the New Training Facility

Project Details and Timeline

The 53,000-square-foot Roadrunner Nurturing Elite Sports Talent (NEST) facility is scheduled to be completed in November 2026. This impressive project, which comes with a price tag of $35 million, will be located across from the university's football complex. It will feature two full-sized NCAA practice courts, ensuring that the student-athletes have ample space to hone their skills. The locker rooms and lounges provided will enhance the overall experience for the teams, creating a more centralized and conducive environment.

The UT System Board of Regents approved this significant project during a meeting in February. The funding sources for the facility are diverse, with $15,000,000 coming from bond proceeds, $10,000,000 in grants from Bexar County and San Antonio, and $10,000,000 in designated funds. Bexar County and the City of San Antonio, through a partnership with UTSA, each contributed $5 million to make this dream a reality. The county commissioners approved their investment in late April, demonstrating the strong support for this initiative.

Partnerships and Future Impact

UTSA emphasized during the commissioner's court meeting that a separate partnership with Visit SA and San Antonio Sports would bring outside sporting events to the complex. This not only adds to the vibrancy of the campus but also provides additional exposure and revenue opportunities for the university. As President Taylor Eighmy stated, "What's good for UTSA, we believe, is good for Bexar County and vice versa. We know UTSA is a prosperity engine for our region." This partnership is expected to have a lasting impact on the local sports community and the economic development of the area.

The presence of the new training facility will attract more attention to UTSA's sports programs and help attract top talent. It will serve as a catalyst for the growth and development of basketball and volleyball at the university, providing the necessary resources and infrastructure for the teams to thrive. The student-athletes will benefit from the modern facilities and coaching staff, enabling them to reach their full potential and compete at a higher level.

Benefits for Student-Athletes

The locker rooms and lounges within the facility will offer a comfortable and inviting space for the student-athletes to relax and bond. They will have access to modern amenities that enhance their overall well-being and performance. The two full-sized NCAA practice courts will allow for intense training sessions and the opportunity to simulate game-like conditions. This will help the teams prepare better for competitions and improve their chances of success.

Moreover, the centralized nature of the amenities will promote a sense of community among the basketball and volleyball teams. They will be able to interact and collaborate more easily, fostering a team spirit that is essential for success in sports. The new training facility will be a source of pride for the UTSA community and will inspire future generations of student-athletes.
