2024-11-12
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team is set to host its annual Orange and Gray World Series, a highly anticipated event that marks the culmination of their fall season. The series, scheduled for November 13-15, promises an exciting showcase of the team's talent and camaraderie as they compete against each other in a game-like environment.

Unleashing the Vaqueros' Competitive Spirit

Friendly Rivalry, Fierce Competition

The Orange and Gray World Series is a unique opportunity for the Vaqueros to put their skills to the test in a competitive yet collegial setting. The teams were split up in a public draft, with analytics volunteer Luis Trevino coaching the orange team and player development volunteer Chris Mondesi leading the gray team. This friendly rivalry is expected to bring out the best in the players as they strive to secure a win for their respective squads."We just want to have fun with the guys," said senior Mason Kosowick. "We've been practicing all fall, but it's a competition with yourself to get reps in. You're competing with your team, trying to get a win under your belt, whether you are orange or gray, so it's going to be fun."

Preparing for Game-Like Intensity

Although the Vaqueros have been scrimmaging and holding regular practices throughout the fall, the Orange and Gray World Series serves as the culmination of their hard work, providing them with a more intense, game-like environment. Head coach Derek Matlock believes this series will push the players to their limits and bring out the best in them."To get closer to a game-like situation, we haven't played anybody but ourselves," Matlock said. "There is more intensity to it, kind of puts pressure on some guys, gets the best out of them. It's good for the fans – we usually have a big crowd in here, especially the Friday night game. It's pretty cool to see."

Embracing the Competitive Spirit

The players are eagerly anticipating the series, viewing it as the culmination of their hard work during the fall season. Senior EJ Miramontes expressed the team's excitement, saying, "We're just excited to be out on the field, compete with the all the guys, and see what happens. It's something we have been working for during the fall. Everyone has been looking forward to this series."

Depth and Versatility on Display

One of the key lessons the Vaqueros have already learned this fall is the depth and versatility of their roster. The return of Angelo Cabral and Victor Loa has helped to solidify the starting rotation, while the team has identified at least five outfielders capable of starting, in addition to depth across the diamond."We have a hard-working group that's really committed to this team," Matlock said. "We had a hot fall; the guys attacked the weight room and grinded through. This team is old and experienced, and they have a good work ethic in them. It's been a good fall from a development standpoint. We noticed that the guys are gaining weight, getting faster, and just developing. This team is athletic and fun to watch, being able to steal bags and do stuff we haven't been able to do here. We got some guys who can really do that, so it's exciting."

A Showcase of Talent and Camaraderie

The Orange and Gray World Series promises to be a thrilling event that showcases the Vaqueros' talent, depth, and team spirit. With the players eager to compete and the fans eagerly anticipating the action, this series is sure to be a highlight of the fall season for the UTRGV baseball program.
