WADA Declines to Appeal Iga Swiatek's Doping Sanction
2025-01-20

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has decided not to challenge the one-month suspension imposed on Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek for a positive test of trimetazidine. This decision comes after an extensive review by WADA, which concluded that Swiatek’s explanation regarding the contamination of a melatonin supplement was credible. The 22-day portion of her backdated ban was served from September to October, with the remaining days completed between November and December. Swiatek has since returned to competitive play, currently advancing to the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

In August, Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine, a prohibited substance. Following this incident, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reviewed the case and determined that her level of fault was minimal and not intentional. Consequently, ITIA issued a one-month suspension in November. Throughout this period, Swiatek maintained transparency about the situation, expressing her belief that no appeal would be forthcoming. Her confidence was bolstered when POLADA, Poland’s national anti-doping body, also chose not to contest the ruling.

WADA conducted a thorough examination of the ITIA decision, consulting with scientific experts who found Swiatek’s explanation plausible. These experts concluded there were no scientific grounds to challenge the ITIA’s findings. Additionally, WADA sought legal counsel, who advised that Swiatek’s explanation was well-supported and aligned with the World Anti-Doping Code. Thus, WADA saw no reasonable basis for an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam champion, is now focused on her performance at the Australian Open. After defeating Eva Lys in a decisive match, she will face Emma Navarro in the quarterfinals. Swiatek aims to surpass her previous best performance in Melbourne, where she has yet to reach the semifinals. Her exceptional talent and resilience continue to make her a formidable presence on the court, as she seeks to add another title to her illustrious career.
