Wednesday Picks for Golden State Racing at Pleasanton's Closing Day
2024-12-17
Golden State Racing at Pleasanton was initially set to conclude on Sunday. However, a Saturday rainout led to a nine-race Wednesday makeup event. Here are my picks for five of these races to assist you in capitalizing on the mandatory payout pools.

Race 2
The No. 1 Horse Doctor, with odds of 5-1, overcame a July layoff and nearly secured a victory at 16-1 here last month. It is expected to have ample pace to chase in this race. The No. 8 Wound Up, the morning-line favorite at 5-2, is one of the most dangerous speed types. It was a runaway winner in its previous race and almost managed to hold on against tougher competition last time out. The No. 9 Irrefutable, at 8-1, is likely to make an impact with the class drop and could find a favorable position stalking from the outside post.In terms of betting with a $100 budget, an exacta box of 1/8/9 is a recommended option.Race 5
The No. 1 Mineral Rights, the morning-line favorite at 5-2, appears to be the controlling speed and outperformed the major danger, the No. 5 Your Royal Flyness, which is at 3-1, when they faced each other on November 23. Your Royal Flyness typically starts slowly but finishes strongly, so keep an eye out for her late charge. The No. 8 Union Harbor, at 4-1, makes sense when considering the turnback in distance. For betting, $15 on the exacta 1/5 and $5 on the exacta 1/8 are suggested.Race 6
The No. 5 Tura Lura, the morning-line favorite at 7-5, didn't have the best start when finishing behind the No. 7 Hollywood Mistress, at 6-1, on November 1. However, it was able to reverse the result in a significant way after taking the lead on November 23. It is clearly the fastest on paper when in top form. Hollywood Mistress has been in the money in five consecutive starts. The No. 2 Remember Sue, at 5-1, has been in excellent form at the meet (2: 1-1-0) but is facing a higher class today. For betting, $15 on the exacta 5/7 and $5 on the exacta 5/2 are recommended.Race 7
The No. 1 Big Bet, at 3-1, has a slight edge over the No. 9 Maximum Capacity, the morning-line favorite at 5-2, in what appears to be a two-horse race on paper. It ran away with a maiden race here previously and then was outperformed in a similar race. Trainer O.J. Jauregui has a winning rate of 30% at the meet, and jockey Assael Espinoza has won with three of the last five Jauregui charges he has ridden. Maximum Capacity steps up in class after beating N2L claimers, but its early speed will keep it in the hunt. The No. 5 Elegant Boy, at 20-1, could make a late move. For betting, a $10 exacta box of 1/9 is a good choice.Race 9
The No. 5 Brother o’ Brien, the morning-line favorite at 3-1, might have been on a five-race winning streak if not for the presence of two rivals, Rich Gold and Sea Dog, who finished 1-2 ahead of it in three consecutive races between August and November. It has mostly been competing at higher levels than this and gets significant class relief today. The No. 1 Wine and Whisky, at 8-1, appears to be the value pick as it had a strong record of 2-1-0 at the $3,200 to $4,000 levels before taking on tougher opponents at the $16,000 level. The claiming price has been halved today. The No. 7 Supermazel, at 6-1, also gets class relief and could make a late impact. For betting, $12 on the exacta 5/1, $4 on the exacta 1/5, $4 on the win for 1, and $2 on the exacta 5/7 are recommended.I also constructed a 20-cent Super High-5 ticket for those looking to chase the mandatory payout pool: 5/1/2,3,7,9/2,3,7,9/2,3,7,9 = $12.80.Robert Criscola is a freelance handicapper based in New York.
