Aden Tagaloa-Nelson, a sophomore defensive back for West Virginia University, is transitioning from the football field to the basketball court as the football season concludes. Head basketball coach Darian DeVries welcomed him back to the team. Last year, Tagaloa-Nelson joined the basketball squad during a period of roster shortages, providing valuable support in practices. His involvement in basketball was limited but promising, while his football contributions were primarily on special teams.
The story of Aden Tagaloa-Nelson’s dual-sport journey began over a year ago when he first caught the attention of interim head basketball coach Josh Eilert during a recruiting trip. Eilert noticed Tagaloa-Nelson’s commitment to West Virginia for football and recognized his potential on the basketball court. The coach extended an open invitation to Tagaloa-Nelson to engage with the basketball program once he arrived at Morgantown.
Eilert described Tagaloa-Nelson as a strong, competitive guard who made a positive impression both on and off the court. After arriving at West Virginia, Tagaloa-Nelson took advantage of the opportunity to join practice sessions and build relationships with the basketball staff. Throughout the football season, he stayed in touch with Eilert, eventually expressing interest in joining the basketball team once football concluded. Eilert enthusiastically accepted, welcoming Tagaloa-Nelson into the fold.
Last season, Tagaloa-Nelson made two appearances for the basketball team, totaling six minutes of playtime against Cincinnati and Texas. Although he did not record any stats, his presence was appreciated by the team. On the football side, Tagaloa-Nelson participated in five games this season, contributing mainly through special teams plays with three tackles.
Tagaloa-Nelson’s ability to balance both sports showcases his versatility and dedication. His experience on the football field has undoubtedly enhanced his physicality and competitiveness, which could prove beneficial on the basketball court. As he rejoins the team, expectations are high for Tagaloa-Nelson to contribute meaningfully, whether in practice or game situations. The coaching staff is optimistic about the value he brings and looks forward to integrating him into the team’s strategies.
