A wheelchair basketball club in Bath, hailed by its members as a supportive and close-knit community, is set to expand and flourish following a substantial donation of £24,045. This financial boost will cover essential costs such as training, coaching, and tournament participation for the next three years. Additionally, the young athletes will sport newly designed home and away uniforms, which they helped create themselves. The generous contribution originates from Omaze, an organization renowned for its charity prize draws. Established under Nova Sports, a non-profit entity promoting inclusive sports opportunities for disabled youth and their families, the Bath Romans have quickly cultivated a robust and lively player and family network.
Jenny Johnson, co-founder of Nova Sports alongside her husband Alex, expressed excitement about the funding, describing it as a significant enhancement for the club. She emphasized that the funds would not only enhance players' confidence but also provide long-term stability. With this support, the club can confidently commit to participating in future tournaments and reassure its young members of its enduring presence. Jenny and Alex, who met during their studies in sport and social sciences at the University of Bath in 2012, have been committed to fostering inclusive sports programs since 2017, culminating in the launch of Bath Romans in 2021.
Alex Johnson, who serves as the team's coach, highlighted the unique environment the club provides. He explained that many participants do not engage in physical education at school due to a lack of appropriate facilities or support. The club offers them a nurturing space where they can excel, forge friendships, and develop pride in their achievements. These experiences translate into newfound confidence when returning to school, bringing medals and stories that enrich their lives. Chrissie, whose daughter Ana joined the club in 2021, noted the remarkable transformation she has witnessed in her child.
The Bath Romans exemplify the power of community and inclusion, proving that with the right resources and support, barriers can be overcome, empowering young individuals to thrive both on and off the court. Through this generous donation, the club is poised to continue inspiring and transforming lives in the region.
