The Whitmire Girls Varsity Tennis Team's Journey to the Upper State Championship

In Lanrum, South Carolina, the Whitmire girls varsity tennis team defied expectations and reached the Upper State Championship. On Wednesday, November 13th, they traveled to Landrum High School to face the lady Cardinals in the championship match. Despite their best efforts, they fell short, finishing as runners-up with a 4-1 score.

Unforgettable Season and Tough Loss for the Whitmire Girls Tennis Team

Championship Match: A Battle to the Brink

It was a cold evening, yet it didn't dampen the spirits of the lady Wolverines. They pushed the lady Cardinals to the very edge. Makeena Moss-Jenkins was the lone winner in her singles match. The other four young ladies fought valiantly but came up just short. This was a remarkable achievement for the lady Wolverines as they were the only 1A team to make it to the Final Four of the Upper State Championship.The team showed incredible fight and strength after playing three matches in a row this week. It was the most improved team coached by Bethany Crumpton. They had worked extremely hard throughout the year and demonstrated tremendous growth. They exceeded all expectations by reaching the Upper-State championship. Although they didn't emerge as overall winners, it was a sweet ending to an incredible season.

Individual Matches: Close Battles with Tough Opponents

In the #1 singles match, I. Taylor (L) defeated Kenleigh Epps (W) with a score of 7-5, 6-1. In the #2 singles, E. Burnett (L) outplayed Ariana Jenkins (W), winning 6-1, 7-5. Makeena Moss-Jenkins (W) showed her mettle in the #3 singles, defeating A. Leonard (L) with a score of 6-2, 3-6, (10-8). In the #4 singles, O. DiNicola (L) prevailed over Brantlee Roche (W), winning 3-6, 6-2, (10-5). And in the #5 singles, A. Campbell (L) dominated Natalie Harris (W), winning 6-2, 6-0.Each match was a close battle, with the Whitmire girls giving their all against tough opponents. Their determination and skill were on full display throughout the championship.

Coach's Perspective: Pride and Growth

Wolverines head coach Bethany Crumpton expressed her pride in the team. "I am so proud of the fight and strength our whole team showed after playing 3 matches in a row this week. This is the most improved team that I have coached. They have worked so hard this year and shown tremendous growth. They have exceeded all expectations, making it to the Upper-State championship.
