As the fall season came to a close, the Northwestern women's tennis team had one final chance to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Graduate student Britany Lau and freshman Mika Dagan Fruchtman represented the Wildcats at the ITA Central Sectional Championship, determined to make the most of their opportunity.

Wildcats Duo Battles to the Semifinals, Narrowly Misses NCAA Berth

Lau's Singles Campaign Ends in Narrow Defeat

Lau, the veteran of the duo, entered the tournament with high hopes of securing an individual NCAA Tournament berth through her singles performance. She started strong, defeating Iowa's Marisa Schmidt 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round. However, Lau's run came to an end in the second round, as she narrowly fell to Oklahoma's Alina Shcherbinina, the nation's 56th-ranked player, in a hard-fought three-set battle.

Lau and Dagan Fruchtman Impress in Doubles

While Lau's singles campaign came to a close, she and Dagan Fruchtman teamed up for a strong doubles performance. The duo had reached the semifinals of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship just a month prior, and they were determined to build on that success.In the opening round, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman faced off against conference rivals from Michigan, Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde, and emerged victorious with a 6-3, 3-6, [10-6] triumph. The quarterfinals proved to be an even easier task, as the Wildcats' pair defeated TCU's Tomi Main and Yu-Chin Tsai 6-4, 6-3.

Semifinal Heartbreak for Wildcats Duo

With a spot in the NCAA Tournament on the line, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman reached the semifinals, needing just one more win to secure their place in Waco, Texas. However, their run came to an end against a formidable Baylor duo of Liubov Kostenko and Cristina Tiglea.The match was a tight affair, with the first set going to a tiebreaker. Lau and Dagan Fruchtman found themselves in a 6-3 deficit in the tiebreaker, a deficit they were unable to overcome. The second set proved to be even more challenging, as the Baylor pair broke the Wildcats' serve early and went on to win the set 6-2, ending Lau and Dagan Fruchtman's tournament run.

With their semifinal loss, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman faced a win-or-go-home scenario in their final match against TCU's Jade Otway and Isabel Pascual. Despite their best efforts, the Wildcats duo fell short, losing 6-4, 7-6(1) and ending their fall season.While the Wildcats' quest for an NCAA Tournament berth came to a disappointing close, Lau and Dagan Fruchtman's impressive run at the ITA Sectional Championships showcased their potential and the team's depth.
