Woodbine Entertainment Retains Longtime Track Superintendent as Racing Surfaces Consultant
2024-11-18
Longtime track superintendent Juan Meza has been secured by Woodbine Entertainment in a crucial role. Meza, with an extensive background, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. His tenure at Golden Gate Fields for over two decades until its recent closure in June is a testament to his expertise. Just like Woodbine, Golden Gate Fields operated on a Tapeta (all-weather) racing surface, having installed it in 2007. His close collaboration with the surface manufacturer (Tapeta Footings) further enhances his value.

Top Priority: Ensuring Safety

Bill Ford, the Executive Vice President of Racing at Woodbine Entertainment, emphasizes that the safety and well-being of both equine athletes and human participants are of utmost importance. Having Mr. Meza available to assist in their ongoing efforts and commitment to maintaining the highest safety standards is a significant step. They will continue to work closely with the HBPA and AGCO to ensure the safest possible conditions for all involved.

Working in Coordination

Meza will work in harmony with Ryan Stafford, the Director of Racing Surfaces. This collaborative effort is aimed at maintaining the safe condition of the Tapeta surface and providing unwavering support to the Racing Surfaces team. Their combined efforts will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of racing operations.

Dealing with Incidents

After a pair of horse deaths on the Nov. 9 program, Woodbine officials were compelled to cancel the last two races, including the GIII Autumn Stakes, which was postponed to the past weekend. As a precautionary measure, the live card scheduled for the following afternoon was also called off. During the week, discussions and evaluations took place, and the track was given the green light to resume racing on Nov. 14, which continued through the weekend. In a separate incident that was deemed unrelated to track conditions, a horse was eased during the Saturday finale at Woodbine and was ultimately euthanized. These incidents highlight the importance of their safety measures and the need for continuous vigilance.Meza's presence and expertise will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success and safety of Woodbine's racing operations. His knowledge and experience in Tapeta will help ensure that the track remains a premier racing venue.
