The decision to limit turf races comes after the tunnel connecting the paddock to the main track suffered damage from heavy rainfall last August. The flooding caused the postponement of the prestigious King’s Plate race from its original date. As the 2025 racing season approaches, starting on April 26, organizers are taking precautionary measures to avoid similar disruptions. Until the renovated section of the turf course is ready, all races on this surface will adhere to the sprint distance limitation.

Furthermore, after the upcoming King’s Plate day on August 16, the outer turf will again face restrictions while its backstretch undergoes resodding. During this period, the inner turf course will host major events such as the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in September. Additionally, concerns have been raised regarding the Tapeta synthetic surface following incidents in November where six fatalities occurred. In response, Woodbine management implemented new safety protocols, including a two-week ban on horses that received joint injections before racing. Experts were also brought in to assess the synthetic track, ensuring it remained operational through the end of the year on December 15.
