Racing Career Highlights
Messier's journey in racing began with a resounding victory in the 2022 Bob Hope (G3), where he crossed the finish line 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Forbidden Kingdom while under the care of Bob Baffert. However, he faced a setback when he settled for second behind Slow Down Andy in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2). But he bounced back with a vengeance, winning the Lewis Stakes still under Baffert's guidance. After being moved to the barn of trainer Tim Yakteen, he finished second to Taiba in the 2022 Santa Anita Derby. This second-place finish earned him a ticket to the Kentucky Derby, where he went on to finish 15th.During his 4-year-old season, Messier was sidelined for the most part. But at age 5, he showed signs of returning to form. In March 2024, he crossed the wire first in the Excelsior for trainer Rick Dutrow. Although he was disqualified to second for causing long shot Laughing Boy to check, it was a promising start. He then went on to hold off Post Time and win the Westchester (G3), his first win in over two years. However, his comeback was short-lived as he bled and was pulled up in the Forty Niner (G3) on Oct. 26, just after his first start back.Stud Career Ahead
Messier, a son of Empire Maker out of the stakes-winning Smart Strike mare Checkered Past, will now stand for a $5,000 stud fee. His bloodline and racing achievements make him a valuable asset in the stud world. With his genes, he has the potential to produce future champions on the racetrack. Horse enthusiasts and breeders alike are eagerly awaiting the arrival of his offspring, hoping to see the same success and talent that he displayed during his own racing career.
