Unveiling the 2025 Graded Stakes Transformations in Thoroughbred Racing

Grade 1 Upgrades and Downgrades

Among the Grade 1 races, there were no changes from 2024. However, the overall significance of these designations remains crucial in the world of Thoroughbred racing. The Grade 1 status represents the highest level of competition and recognition.

For example, the American Turf's upgrade to Grade 1 highlights its importance and the quality of the field it attracts. It sets a benchmark for other races and showcases the excellence of the Thoroughbred breed.

Grade 2 Upgrades and Downgrades

Three races were upgraded to Grade 2 status for 2025, including the Jockey Club Derby Invitational at various tracks and the Sycamore at Keeneland. These upgrades add to the prestige of these races and attract more attention from both trainers and bettors.

On the other hand, 10 races were downgraded from Grade 2 to Grade 3. This shows the dynamic nature of the racing landscape and the need for continuous evaluation and adjustment.

Grade 3 Upgrades and Downgrades

Nine races were upgraded to Grade 3 status, such as the Glen Cove and Winter Memories at certain tracks. These upgrades bring more recognition and value to the races, enhancing their appeal.

Conversely, 22 races were downgraded from Grade 3 to listed status. This indicates a shift in the competitive level and may lead to changes in the strategies of trainers and jockeys.

Listed and Listed-Restricted Upgrades and Downgrades

Twelve races were upgraded to listed status, including various events at different tracks. These upgrades offer additional opportunities for younger horses and provide a stepping stone in their careers.

One race was upgraded to listed-restricted status, further expanding the range of racing categories and opportunities.

Twenty-one races were downgraded from listed to non-listed black-type status, highlighting the fluidity of the racing hierarchy.
