Alabama men's basketball team showcased their prowess on the road Wednesday as they rematched with North Carolina from last season's Sweet 16. This SEC/ACC Challenge victory not only added to their win count but also set the stage for what's to come.

Unstoppable Alabama Basketball - A Season of Triumphs

Burn the Redshirt

Initially, Alabama had planned to redshirt Houston Mallette, saving his final season of eligibility for a more impactful court time. However, Latrell Wrightsell Jr.'s Achilles tendon injury forced a change in plans. Nate Oats revealed on Tuesday that the team was considering burning Mallette's redshirt to fill the void left by Wrightsell. And on Wednesday, that's exactly what happened.

Mallette, who transferred from Pepperdine this offseason, played a significant role in the game. He spent nine minutes on the court, scoring six points, grabbing three rebounds, and contributing two steals. "We just thought it was best for the team," Mallette said after the game. "In my opinion, what's best for me is also best for the team, and I'm willing to do anything to help."

Happy Homecoming

Jarin Stevenson got the chance to play against his hometown team during last year's NCAA Tournament win in Los Angeles. On Wednesday, he made his actual homecoming and brought over 20 people to the game. "Definitely it's a surreal feeling," Stevenson said. "My mom played here too, so it was great to be back and get the win."

Stevenson scored six points in 12 minutes of action, with all his points coming from three-pointers as he went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. He also had three rebounds, an assist, and a block. "Jaren kind of settled in and made some big threes for us," Oats said. "He did a great job on (UNC's) RJ Davis, who is not an easy guard."

The Freshman

Mark Sears led Alabama in points once again, scoring 20 and showing his consistent scoring ability. Tied for second place were freshmen guards Labaron Philon and Aden Holloway, both with 15 points each.

Philon has been a standout in Alabama's true road games this year. He scored 18 points, his season high, at Purdue in November. "He's a competitor," Oats said of Philon. "He practices hard and deserves to play well. He brings it every day in practice and has been doing so since he stepped on the court."

Philon also had four rebounds and four assists, along with three steals. His all-around performance showcases the potential of the freshmen on the team.
