Amahée Charrier: Overcoming Adversity, Embracing Greatness on the Nevada Tennis Courts
2024-11-01
Amahée Charrier's path to becoming a standout tennis player for the Nevada Wolf Pack was anything but straightforward. From a last-minute change of plans to adjusting to the harsh Reno climate, Charrier's resilience and determination have been the driving forces behind her remarkable success on the court.
A Serendipitous Detour Leads to Unexpected Greatness
Amahée Charrier's initial plans to play for the Georgia State women's tennis team were derailed at the eleventh hour due to unexpected paperwork issues. Undeterred, Charrier's mother encouraged her to accept the next scholarship offer that came her way, and that's how the native of Tours, France found herself in Reno, Nevada, home of the Nevada Wolf Pack. The transition was not an easy one for Charrier, who was accustomed to the warm weather of her hometown. "Snow, snow, snow," she recalls of her first impression of Reno, a stark contrast to the climate she had grown up in. "The first impression wasn't good for me because I like to play when it's like really, really hot."Despite the initial culture shock, Charrier has since embraced Reno as her new home, and the Wolf Pack as her family. Her journey has been one of personal growth and athletic excellence, as she has blossomed both as a player and as a person.Overcoming Self-Doubt and Embracing Her Potential
One of Charrier's most significant challenges has been her own self-doubt and imposter complex. Despite her impressive achievements, including earning Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors and becoming a two-time All-MW singles team honoree, Charrier has struggled with confidence, often feeling that her opponents are better than her."Whatever match I'm seeing, I always feel they play better than me," Charrier confesses. "I know that I play good, but in D-I college tennis, all the girls are so impressive that sometimes I also forget that I do play good, too, and I always try my best."This lack of self-belief has, paradoxically, been a driving force for Charrier on the court. Her head coach, Guillaume Tonelli, a fellow Frenchman, has worked tirelessly to help Charrier recognize her own potential and capabilities."She actually doesn't like to set high goals for herself because she doesn't want to be disappointed," Tonelli explains. "But we've worked on that. And slowly we kind of put it in her ears, 'Hey, you can do this. You've got the level, you've got the physical ability and you've got everything that you need to be successful,' and I think she's slowly taking it in and thinking about it and kind of showing it with her results and her personality."Embracing Her Unique Playing Style and Competitive Spirit
Charrier's playing style is described as "atypical" by her coach, but it is precisely this unique approach that has made her a formidable opponent on the court. Tonelli praises Charrier's dogged never-say-die mentality, her ability to adapt to her opponent's pace, and her sheer determination to grind out every point."She digs in and she grinds it out. She plays really fast. If you play well, she plays well. If you slow down, she slows down. And she adapts really well," Tonelli says. This competitive spirit, however, can sometimes lead to heated exchanges between Charrier and her coach during matches. Charrier acknowledges this, describing her on-court persona as "impulsive and expressive.""I scream a lot, but I need that to play good; I can't play quiet," Charrier says. "We argue a lot. I feel that we're never on the same page honestly, but I like the way he's really, really passionate with me. I feel that other coaches would honestly lose their mind with me, but he's really patient and tries to understand me and we communicate really well."Reaching New Heights: Charrier's Promising Future
Despite the unexpected detour that brought her to Nevada, Charrier has achieved her lifelong goal of playing college tennis. Her love for the sport is evident, as she describes it as "like walking to me."While Charrier is hesitant to discuss her future goals, her coach sees immense potential in her. "I think the sky's the limit," Tonelli says. "She's there mentally, physically, tennis-wise. It's really a choice that's going to come from from her, and whatever heights she wants to to reach, I'll be there to keep pushing her."As Charrier continues to excel on the court, her inspiring journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of a dedicated coach. With her unique playing style and unrelenting competitive spirit, the future looks bright for this rising star of the Nevada Wolf Pack.
