The winter transfer portal window has officially opened, presenting a significant phase for Auburn football. Several of its 2024 roster members are now strategizing their next steps. As anticipated, many seek a fresh start in their college careers, including those who donned the orange and blue in 2024. Auburn aims to address its needs by welcoming entrants from other programs as it continues its rebuilding journey.

Transfer Portal: A Critical Period for Auburn Football

The transfer portal window holds great importance for Hugh Freeze and his coaching staff as they strive to enhance the team's 2024 record of 5-7. Several areas require attention, such as quarterback, running back, tight end, defensive line, and secondary. Staying updated with Auburn football's departures during this window is crucial.

Quarterback Departures

Holden Geriner was the first Tiger to announce his intention to transfer. In three seasons on the Plains, he passed for 116 yards and zero touchdowns. This departure leaves a void at the quarterback position. Another notable quarterback, Hank Brown, showed promise early in the season but faced challenges later. After throwing three interceptions in Auburn's 24-14 loss to Arkansas, he didn't see action for the rest of the year. In two seasons at Auburn, he passed for 535 yards and six touchdowns.

Tight End Exits

Grant Hidalgo entered the transfer portal after appearing in four games over the last two seasons. He added to the list of tight end departures. Micah Riley also left after playing in 24 games in three seasons at Auburn, logging 200 snaps and making three catches for 43 yards and two scores.

Receiver Movements

Camden Brown brought a significant presence to Auburn's receiver room but didn't become a regular. In three seasons, he had 26 catches for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Caleb Burton transferred from Ohio State, hoping to contribute at wide receiver. However, his production dropped in 2024, as he caught just two passes for 49 yards. He spent much of the season in concussion protocol, limiting his on-field action.

Defensive Line Departures

Gage Keys failed to secure a regular spot within the defensive line rotation this season and chose to enter the transfer portal after one year on the Plains. He appeared in two games and didn't record any stats. True freshman TJ Lindsey also exited Auburn after one season, playing just 10 snaps against Alabama A&M on Aug. 31.

Other Departures

QB Holden Geriner's departure is significant as he was part of the team for three seasons. OL EJ Harris signed with Auburn in 2022 but played only 48 snaps in five games between 2023 and 2024. DB Antonio Kite joined Auburn as a transfer from rival Alabama but is now on the move again, having appeared in five games and making six tackles and one interception. The headlining departure is safety Caleb Wooden, who logged 591 snaps over the last three seasons with an average grade of 69.6 according to Pro Football Focus and left with 41 tackles and two interceptions.
