The Phantoms' doubles teams struggled, suffering straight-set losses, and Romano battled through a three-set thriller before ultimately falling to Byram Hills' Jenna Klynerman.Reflecting on a Historic Season
While the Phantoms fell short of their ultimate goal, their coach, John Selvaggio, was immensely proud of the team's accomplishments. "They were champions before they ever stepped on the court — one match does not define a season," Selvaggio said. "We went farther than any team from our county has gone, and I could not be more pleased with our season."Senior Emilia Romano echoed her coach's sentiments, acknowledging the team's historic achievements. "This was a historic season for us. I'm proud of how far [the senior] class brought this program over the years and I see great things for it ahead."Building for the Future
Despite the heartbreaking loss in the state final, the Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms have a bright future ahead. Of the eight players in the starting lineup, five will return next season, and Selvaggio is excited about the pipeline of talented seventh-graders who will join the experienced group. With the leadership and experience gained this season, the Phantoms are poised to continue their dominance in the years to come. As Castka eloquently stated, "Everyone who's here deserved to be here and everyone took a part in being able to be here." The future is bright for this remarkable tennis program.
