Boxing Community Unites to Support Former Champion Bobby Czyz in His Battle Against Cancer
2025-02-10

The boxing community has rallied together to assist former light-heavyweight and cruiserweight champion Bobby Czyz, who is currently facing a significant health challenge. Diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas, Czyz, now 63 years old, requires financial support to aid his ongoing battle. A fundraiser event has been organized for Sunday, March 30th, at the Nutley Elks Lodge in New Jersey, where several boxing legends will gather to raise funds for this beloved figure.

Throughout his career, Czyz captivated audiences with memorable bouts against notable opponents such as Charles Williams, Dennis Andries, Leslie Stewart, Virgil Hill, Robert Daniels, Donny Lalonde, and Evander Holyfield. These thrilling matches made him a fan favorite. Now, those same fans have an opportunity to return the favor. The charity event will request a $100 donation from attendees and will feature the presence of distinguished former champions including Larry Holmes, Michael Spinks, Junior Jones, Iran Barkley, Tim Witherspoon, and heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney. Their willingness to contribute demonstrates the solidarity within the boxing fraternity.

Beyond his impressive fighting record, Czyz also excelled as a commentator for Showtime, adding another dimension to his legacy. Unfortunately, he faced financial hardships even before his recent diagnosis. Despite retiring in 1998 with a commendable 44-8 (28 KOs) record, Czyz did not enjoy the financial stability one might expect after such a distinguished career. However, there is hope that through collective efforts, he can regain his footing. It is heartening to see so many individuals stepping up to ensure that someone who has given so much to the sport receives the support he deserves. May this event inspire more people to contribute generously towards this noble cause.
