Canterbury Park's 2025 Racing Season Proposal
2024-11-20
Canterbury Park racing officials have put forward a significant request to the Minnesota Racing Commission. They aim for a 51-day Thoroughbred and quarter-horse season starting on Saturday, May 24, and concluding on Saturday, Sept. 20. Racing will mainly take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 6 p.m. EDT, with Sundays at 2 p.m. Additionally, there are plans for six Thursday racing programs from July 3 to Sept. 18, starting at 6 p.m. A nine-day break from racing is scheduled from July 14 to July 22. This 2025 calendar has three fewer dates compared to 2024, beginning a week later and ending a week earlier.
President's Perspective
Company president Randy Sampson emphasizes the importance of the proposed calendar. He states, "We have crafted a calendar that is highly beneficial for our horse population. It offers multiple chances for horses to enter and compete. We are focused on building on the success of the last season, with continued growth in handle and field size." This shows their commitment to the racing community.Handle and Field Size Growth
The recently concluded 54-day race meet witnessed remarkable achievements. There was a 13 percent increase in handle, indicating a boost in betting activity. Simultaneously, there was a 13 percent growth in thoroughbred field size, suggesting a more competitive and diverse racing environment. This growth is a positive sign for the future of Canterbury Park.Stall Applications and Stable Area
Stall applications will become available in March, with a deadline in mid-April. The stable area is expected to open for arrivals in the second week of May, providing a timely setup for the upcoming season. This allows trainers and owners to prepare and get their horses ready for the races.Racing Infrastructure Improvements
A $15 million stable area and racing infrastructure improvement project is nearing completion. It began in 2023 with the addition of a 36-unit dormitory, a complete replacement of the main track lighting system, and a reconfiguration of the training track. The past season also saw the opening of three new barns, providing a summer home for over 300 horses. Additionally, a new safety rail was installed on the main track, the stable entrance gate was relocated, and a main track chute was constructed to accommodate races at seven furlongs. Expected to be completed in May is a 33-pad permanent RV park and newly paved circulation roads throughout the backside and barn areas. These improvements enhance the overall racing experience and safety at Canterbury Park.Commission's Consideration
The Minnesota Racing Commission will review Canterbury's race date request at its December meeting. This is a crucial step in determining the future of the 2025 racing season. The outcome of this consideration will have a significant impact on the racing community and the future of Canterbury Park.
