Chicago Sun-Times' 2024 High School Football Player: Geneva's Talyn Taylor
2024-12-13
Talyn Taylor's story is one of remarkable speed and determination. Even as a young Pop Warner football player, his talent was evident. His coach often remarked on how he ran as if his hair was on fire. It was a speed that was there right from the start.

Developing into a High School Legend

The Geneva senior eventually learned to harness his speed and became one of the best high school wide receivers in state history. He shattered school records and caught the attention of college coaches across the country. Vikings coach Boone Thorgesen described him as the total package, comparing him to NFL receivers due to his versatility and toughness to guard.

Taylor led the Vikings to a second-place finish in the Class 6A state playoffs. In the title game against East St. Louis, he had eight catches for 116 yards and a touchdown. He matched up against another SEC-bound player, East St. Louis cornerback Charles Bass, and made him look like any other kid. His talent was truly special.

Overcoming Challenges

This magical season for the Vikings almost didn't happen. Taylor had the opportunity to go to IMG Academy in Florida twice but chose to stay at Geneva to be a part of something special with his friends. The chemistry and friendship among the team carried over onto the field, resulting in a remarkable season.

Geneva wasn't ranked in the preseason due to questions about the first-year starting quarterback Tony Chahino. However, Chahino stepped up and threw for 3,600 yards and 49 touchdowns, getting college interest. Taylor's decision to stay had a significant impact on his teammates and the town.

Standout Skills and Growth

Naturally quiet and humble, Taylor admitted that his route running sets him apart from other players. He can be fast and smooth at the same time and is a big student of the game, enjoying coaching and criticism.

As a sophomore, he was already a standout receiver, but his senior year was on a different level. He got attention from defenses as a sophomore and was double-teamed as a junior. Senior year, he faced the same treatment but had elevated his game to the point where it didn't matter. He was unphased by any challenges.

Achieving Greatness

Taylor finished the season with 84 receptions for 1,617 yards and 24 touchdowns. He averaged 19 yards per catch, returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, and totaled 2,208 all-purpose yards. His impact on the team was undeniable.

High school sports brought the Geneva community together during this magical season. It wasn't just about Talyn Taylor; it was about everyone coming together to achieve a common goal. His story is an inspiration to all.
