2024-12-01
Godolphin's promising homebred 2-year-old filly Good Cheer continued to make waves as she dominated the 81st running of the Grade 2, $400,000 Golden Rod Stakes at Churchill Downs. In a thrilling race, she showcased her exceptional talent by easily outpacing her stablemate Éclatant and fending off a late charge from Quietside to claim victory by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths.

Impressive Performance and Earnings

Good Cheer's recent victory was her fourth straight win, including a 4 3/4-length triumph in the $200,000 Rags to Riches at Churchill Downs a month ago. She covered the 1 1/16 miles distance over a fast track in a remarkable 1:43.26, ranking second fastest in Golden Rod history behind the legendary Rachel Alexandra's 1:43.08 in 2008. This outstanding performance earned her the $242,470 first prize and 10 points towards the Kentucky Oaks (G1), where points are awarded on a scale of 10-5-3-2-1 to the top five finishers of early prep races. With a combined winning margin of 32 1/2 lengths in four starts, her earnings now stand at a substantial $457,630.

Breeding and Ownership

Good Cheer, by Medaglia d'Oro, is out of the Street Sense mare Wedding Toast. Bred in Kentucky by her owners, she represents the excellence of Godolphin's breeding program. Her pedigree suggests a promising future, and her consistent performances have already made a significant impact.

Race Strategy and Rider's Perspective

Luis Sáez, who rode the winner for trainer Brad Cox, provided valuable insights into the race. He mentioned that Good Cheer had been extremely impressive in all her starts so far. Around the turn, she was tugging at him, indicating her determination to take the lead. Sáez knew it was the right moment to go, and she finished strongly down the stretch. Tyler Gaffalione, who rode Quietside, also put up a good fight, but Good Cheer's superior speed and determination proved too much.

Quietside, at odds of 7-2, was a clear second-best, paying $3.28 and $2.30. Sturgeon Moon finished fourth, followed by Flash Wear, Fixin to Bee, and My Lil Punky. Each of these fillies contributed to an exciting race, highlighting the depth of talent in the 2-year-old filly division.Good Cheer's success is a testament to the hard work and expertise of her trainers and riders.
