Clemson Spring Scrimmage: Evaluating Quarterbacks and Cornerbacks
2025-03-13

The Clemson Tigers recently conducted their first spring scrimmage at Memorial Stadium, where head coach Dabo Swinney expressed concerns about the performance of starting quarterback Cade Klubnik. According to Swinney, Klubnik appeared distracted during the session, showing an ordinary level of play. Swinney humorously suggested that Klubnik might already be mentally on vacation. As a result, backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina received significant playing time with the first team, showcasing notable progress compared to last season.

Christopher Vizzina’s contributions were highlighted when he successfully led the scrimmage's opening drive to a touchdown. His growth is pivotal for Clemson as he is expected to succeed Klubnik in the future. Meanwhile, Swinney pointed out that the offense encountered several errors, particularly within the red zone, including multiple interceptions by quarterbacks. These mistakes were attributed to both poor decisions and defensive prowess, reinforcing the need for continuous improvement.

In addition to the quarterbacks, Swinney voiced dissatisfaction with the cornerback group, emphasizing the need for development among younger players such as Branden Strozier, Tavoy Feagin, and Corian Gipson. Despite limited experience, these athletes must advance significantly if they are to support veterans like Avieon Terrell and Ashton Hampton. With practice resuming after spring break, there is ample opportunity for all players to refine their skills and elevate their game. The focus remains on nurturing talent and fostering resilience, ensuring Clemson maintains its competitive edge in collegiate football.
