WEEKEND STAKES

Del Mar is set to host a series of high-stakes races over the weekend. On Friday, the $200,000, Grade II Hollywood Turf Cup will take place, featuring 3-year-olds and up over 1 1/2 miles on turf. This is a highly competitive race that will showcase the best of the Del Mar talent.

Saturday brings three more prestigious races. The $300,000, Grade I Hollywood Derby will see 3-year-olds compete over 1 1/8 miles on turf. The $200,000, Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap will feature 3 and up over 1 1/16 miles on turf, and the $100,000, Grade III Jimmy Durante Stakes will have 2-year-old fillies racing over 1 mile on turf.

DOWN THE STRETCH

Leading U.S. jockey Flavien Prat is making his mark at Del Mar. He is riding in all seven Turf Festival races as he chases North American records for stakes wins and graded-stakes wins. His presence on the track adds an extra layer of excitement to the races.

Prat has some notable mounts this weekend. He will have Dicey Mo Chara in the Hollywood Turf Cup on Friday, Rothschild in the Hollywood Derby, Redistricting in the Seabiscuit Handicap and Supa Speed in the Jimmy Durante on Saturday. On Sunday, he will ride Prerequisite in the Matriarch, Scipio in the Cecil B. DeMille and Slider in the Stormy Liberal.

With nine of this year's 13 highest-earning jockeys at Del Mar this week, the competition is intense. Prat's pursuit of records is adding to the drama and anticipation of the races.

The Exciting 3-year-old filly Accuracy

The Michael McCarthy-trained 3-year-old filly Accuracy is set to make her next appearance at Del Mar on Friday. She won an allowance-level mile at Santa Anita last month by 15 lengths, earning a Beyer speed figure of 107 for covering 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.44. This performance has made her one of the fastest 3-year-old fillies in North America in 2024.

If she performs well at Del Mar, Accuracy could be headed to the 7-furlong La Brea Stakes on the Dec. 26 opening-day card at Santa Anita. Her potential is evident, and racing fans are eager to see what she can do.

Juan Hernandez's Quest for the Jockey Title

Juan Hernandez is entering the final weekend with a lead over Umberto Rispoli and Antonio Fresu. With 13 wins to their 12, he is aiming for his fourth consecutive jockey title at a Del Mar meet. His consistent performance and skill have put him in a strong position.

The competition is tight, and every race counts. Hernandez will be looking to maintain his lead and secure the title in the final races of the meet.

The First Kentucky Derby Qualifying-Points Race

Saturday at Churchill Downs will see the first Kentucky Derby qualifying-points race since the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Jonathan’s Way, the Ohio-bred who won the Iroquois Stakes at Churchill before finishing seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, will start from post 2 of 10 and race 1 1/16 miles in the $400,000, Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes.

This race is an important step in the path to the Kentucky Derby, and Jonathan’s Way will be looking to perform well and earn valuable qualifying points.
