2025-02-14

The Kentucky Derby hopefuls have been busy honing their skills on racetracks across the United States. Several promising contenders, including Speed King and Burning Glory, have showcased impressive workouts this week. These performances are crucial as they prepare for the prestigious Kentucky Derby. The workouts provide trainers with valuable insights into their horses' fitness levels and readiness for upcoming races. Notably, Speed King's performance at Oaklawn Park has garnered attention, while other contenders like Filoso and Innovator have also demonstrated strong times. The betting odds for these horses have begun to shift, reflecting the growing anticipation and confidence in their abilities.

Speed King Makes Impressive Progress

One of the standout performers this week is Speed King, who has been making significant strides under the guidance of trainer Ron Moquett. After a victorious run in the Grade 3 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park, Speed King completed a sharp four-furlong workout in 48.0 seconds. This time was notably fourth fastest among 117 horses at the same distance. His recent success in the Southwest Stakes earned him 20 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby, bringing his total to 25 points. Speed King has won two out of three starts, with his only defeat coming by a narrow margin in the Springboard Mile at Remington in December.

In preparation for the Kentucky Derby, Speed King's workouts have been meticulously planned to ensure peak performance. Following his win in the Southwest Stakes, this recent workout marks his second since that victory. The horse's consistent improvement has not gone unnoticed by bettors. At Caesars Sportsbook, Speed King's odds have shortened from 50-1 to 33-1 within a week. In the latest Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool, he is listed at 30-1 on the morning line. Trainers and fans alike are closely watching Speed King's progress as he continues to build momentum toward the big race.

Other Contenders Show Promise in Workouts

Beyond Speed King, several other Kentucky Derby hopefuls have made notable appearances in morning workouts. Among them, Burning Glory turned heads with a swift four-furlong run in 48.6 seconds at Payson Park. This was the fastest time recorded among 18 horses at the same distance. Trainer Bill Mott’s charge had previously placed third in the Holy Bull (G3) at Gulfstream Park. Dominant Spirit also impressed with a four-furlong workout in 48.6 seconds at Sam Houston, ranking second fastest out of 41 horses. Filoso clocked the fastest five-furlong time of 59.1 seconds at Palm Meadows, showing strong potential after placing sixth in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2).

Hot Property, Innovator, Curvino, Smoken Wicked, Grande, and He’s Not Joking all contributed to an exciting week of workouts. Hot Property posted a respectable four-furlong time of 49.8 seconds at Fair Grounds, while Innovator led the pack with a five-furlong sprint of 59.8 seconds at Oaklawn. Curvino and Smoken Wicked both achieved the fastest five-furlong times at Oaklawn and Fair Grounds respectively. Lastly, Grande and He’s Not Joking delivered commendable performances at Palm Beach Downs and Palm Meadows. Each of these workouts provides critical data for trainers and bettors, shaping expectations for the Kentucky Derby.
