Evergreen Park Baseball's Holiday Party & Toy Drive Tradition

It's a heartwarming sight as underprivileged children continue to reap the benefits of a special holiday tradition. Each year, Evergreen Park's baseball team and the Mustang Baseball Academy come together to host a festive holiday party. In the past four years, this event has included a wiffle ball tournament where participants generously donate an item for Toys for Tots. Scheduled for December 11 at the EPCHS Sports Complex, fun and good cheer have been the hallmarks of these past gatherings.

Honoring Coach Jerry Tokars

Longtime coach Jerry Tokars, who sadly passed away in 2017, was commemorated on December 6 when De La Salle named its basketball court after him. He dedicated his life to teaching and coaching at the Chicago school, as well as taking on coaching roles at Richards, Moraine Valley, Leo, and Stagg. Beyond being a legendary coach, he spent some of his summers managing the Chicago Ridge Park District summer programs and the Worth pool. At De La Salle, he achieved an astonishing 425-157 record from 1961 to 1983 and was also a four-year starter as a player. His legacy lives on through this special naming ceremony.

Trinity Christian's Soccer Journey

Trinity Christian's men's soccer team had a bittersweet experience in the semifinals of the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament on December 6 in Kissimmee, Florida. The Trolls (17-7-1) fought hard but ultimately lost 5-3 in penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw in regulation. J.P. Quaresma scored in the 64th minute and Rafel Torres found the net in the 86th minute to force the extra play. Earlier in the season, they faced tough losses to Judson in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play and the NCCAA North Central Regional title game.

The Chicago Fire II's Coaching Change

The Chicago Fire II, which calls SeatGeek Stadium its home, made a significant coaching hire by bringing in Mike Matkovich. Matkovich served as the Chicago Fire's head domestic scout for the past two seasons and brings with him over three decades of coaching experience. His coaching stints have included assistant coaching roles with the Fire, Columbus Crew, Chivas USA, and Toronto FC. This new appointment is expected to bring a fresh perspective and energy to the team.

The Chicago Stars' Postseason Awards

The Chicago Stars handed out their postseason awards with great pride. Goalie Alyssa Naeher was named MVP, Sam Staab received the Newcomer of the Year and Defender of the Year awards, and Jameese Joseph won both the Rookie of the Year Award and the Chicago Grit Award. Naeher also concluded her international career with a 2-1 win against the Netherlands on December 3. She and teammate Mallory Swanson were among the nominees for U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year. Additionally, the team signed Spanish midfielder Maitane Lopez to a two-year contract. She previously played two seasons for Gotham.

Loyola University's Volleyball Triumph

Loyola University's women's volleyball team achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the program's first NCAA tournament match. On December 5 in West Lafayette, Indiana, they stunned fifth-seeded BYU in three sets. Mother McAuley grad Sam Falk had an outstanding performance with 11 digs and four assists. This victory is a significant moment for the Loyola volleyball program.

St. Xavier's Basketball Success

St. Xavier had a thrilling win in a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game on December 7. They beat Governors State 104-95. The Cougars (7-2, 3-0) have now scored in triple figures four times this season, showcasing their offensive prowess. This win adds to their growing reputation in the college basketball scene.
