FAMU Football's Offseason Priorities for 2025 Season
2024-12-26

Florida A&M University’s football team is gearing up for the upcoming season with several critical areas that need attention. After a 7-5 record in 2024, the Rattlers face challenges in leadership on the field and behind the scenes. The team must address key personnel changes, including finding a new quarterback and reassessing the coaching staff. Additionally, the defense, which struggled compared to its stellar performance in 2023, requires reinforcement through strategic recruitment and player development.

The Rattlers have already made strides by securing transfers to bolster their lineup, but more work lies ahead. The coaching staff will undergo changes, particularly on offense, while the defensive unit aims to regain its former dominance. With these adjustments, FAMU hopes to return to form and compete at a higher level in the 2025 season.

Selecting a Strong Quarterback Leader

One of the most pressing issues for the Rattlers is determining who will lead the offense as the starting quarterback. The departure of Daniel Richardson leaves an open position, with multiple candidates vying for the role. Tyler Jefferson, a transfer from Central Michigan, brings experience and potential, having shown both strengths and areas for improvement in his previous season. Meanwhile, Junior Muratovic returns after competing for the starting spot last year, offering familiarity and internal competition.

Jefferson’s arm strength and rushing ability make him a promising candidate, despite his lower completion rate and occasional turnovers. His adaptability to FAMU’s system will be crucial. On the other hand, Muratovic’s two career starts provide valuable insight into his capabilities. Balancing between these options will be essential for the Rattlers’ offensive success. The decision will likely hinge on who can best execute the game plan and inspire confidence among teammates. This choice could significantly impact the team’s overall performance in the upcoming season.

Rebuilding the Coaching Staff and Defense

The Rattlers are also focused on revamping their coaching staff to better support the team’s needs. Head coach James Colzie III has indicated that changes are imminent, particularly on the offensive side. Henry Burris, the quarterbacks coach, is expected to take on a larger role, possibly as the new offensive coordinator. This move follows successful play-calling in the final games of the previous season. Meanwhile, the defense and special teams will see adjustments aimed at improving performance.

Last year, the once-dominant 'Dark Cloud Defense' slipped to 50th in the Football Championship Subdivision, struggling against both running plays and deep passes. Key players like defensive tackle James Ash and cornerback Kendall Bohler are graduating, necessitating new talent to fill these roles. To address this, FAMU has secured commitments from experienced transfers such as Xavier Perkins and DJ Jones, along with additional reinforcements in the secondary. Returning players like Davion Westmoreland and Nay’Ron Jenkins will also play pivotal roles in strengthening the defense. By combining fresh talent with seasoned contributors, the Rattlers aim to restore their defensive prowess and set the stage for a competitive 2025 season.
