First Resort found his rhythm early in the race, positioning himself perfectly. As they turned for home, Saez could feel the power beneath him. The colt took off down the lane with astonishing speed and left the rallying favorite Jonathan’s Way in the dust, winning by 2 ¼ lengths. Trained by Eoin Harty and owned by Godolphin, First Resort has now amassed an impressive record of 2-for-4. He won in his debut at Ellis Park, ran second in the Saratoga Special (G2), and finished fourth in the Summer Stakes (G1) at Woodbine. The winning time of 1:43.01 for the 1 1/16 miles was a testament to his prowess.
“We were in a prime position early on,” said Saez. “Turning for home, I knew we had a lot of horse left. He really exploded down the stretch, and I believe he will only get better with more distance.”
Unbeaten Good Cheer, the 3-5 favorite, lived up to the hype with a convincing 2½-length victory over Quietside in the $400,000 Golden Rod Stakes (G2). Ridden by Luis Saez and trained by Brad Cox for Godolphin, this Medaglia d’Oro filly has been on a roll, improving to 4-for-4. The 1 1/16-mile Golden Rod is a crucial qualifier for the Kentucky Oaks (G1), and Good Cheer earned 10 points, while the other finishers received points on a sliding scale.
“Her record speaks for itself,” said Cox. “The way she has won all of these races has been truly impressive. She has handled everything we have put her through so far with ease, and I think we have yet to see her best.”
In the field of seven 2-year-old fillies, Edatant finished third, Sturgeon Moon fourth, and Flash Wave fifth. Good Cheer’s victory was a dominant display of her talent and potential.
