FSU Football: Linebacker Shawn Murphy Joins Transfer Portal
2024-12-18
The Florida State Seminoles football team, like many others this year, has been actively involved in the transfer portal. Today was a particularly busy day as they added two impact players in the trenches. However, as is well-known, the transfer portal can bring as well as take away. Tonight, it was announced that linebacker Shawn Murphy plans to enter the transfer portal once again.

Murphy's Journey with Florida State

Just last season, Murphy joined the Florida State Seminoles from the transfer portal. Now, he will be the fifth Seminole to depart via the portal after transferring to Tallahassee the previous season. In this season alone, Murphy appeared in four games and managed to record 13 tackles, with six of them being solo. His college football career at Alabama was also quite remarkable. Over two seasons, he appeared in 18 games and recorded five tackles along with one pass breakup. In 2023, he saw action in 13 games for the SEC champion Crimson Tide and made two tackles. During his redshirt year in 2022, he had two solo stops and one pass breakup. His collegiate debut came against ULM where he made one tackle. In the Sugar Bowl against No. 9 Kansas State, he registered one tackle and one pass breakup. Murphy was a consensus four-star recruit, ranked as the country's No. 1 inside linebacker in the Class of 2022 and Virginia's No. 2 prospect by ESPN. He was also ranked No. 37 in the ESPN300. Rivals ranked him No. 2 nationally among inside linebackers, No. 3 among Virginia prospects and No. 49 in America. In the 247Sports Composite, he was rated as the No. 6 linebacker prospect, No. 2 overall prospect in Virginia and No. 72 nationally. He was the 2021 Dick Butkus High School Linebacker of the Year and was selected to the Under-Armour All-America Game and All-American Bowl. In his senior season at Unity Reed, he recorded 116 tackles, 20.0 for loss with 6.0 sacks, and two interceptions, leading his team to the second round of the Class 6 state playoffs. He also earned second-team all-state honors and was named the Class 6 Region B Defensive Player of the Year while leading his team to the playoffs in 2019. As a freshman, he started and earned first-team all-district honors with 85 tackles, 29.0 for loss with 5.0 sacks.

The Impact of Transfer Portal Movements

The transfer portal has become a significant aspect of college football in recent years. It allows teams to bring in new talent and also gives players the opportunity to explore different programs. For the Florida State Seminoles, these portal movements have had a notable impact. The addition of two impact players in the trenches today shows their efforts to strengthen the team. However, the departure of linebacker Shawn Murphy also raises questions about the team's depth and stability. It is a delicate balance that teams like Florida State have to manage in the transfer portal era.

Offseason Tracking and Adaptation

In the offseason, it is crucial for teams to keep a close eye on the comings and goings of the transfer portal. This helps them stay updated on the latest developments and make necessary adjustments. The Florida State Seminoles have been doing just that with their offseason tracking thread. By closely monitoring these movements, they can better prepare for the upcoming season and ensure that they have the right mix of players on the roster. It is a challenging task, but one that is essential for the success of the team.
