Gael Monfils: No Coaching Plans After Tennis Retirement
2024-12-07
Gael Monfils, a veteran on the ATP Tour with 20 years of experience, is known for his entertaining style and quickness. He has left a lasting legacy as one of the most beloved players, with crowds flocking to watch him play. Now aged 38, the time is approaching for him to retire from professional tennis, and he has already decided on his post-tennis career.

What Does Gael Monfils Want to Do When He Retires?

Monfils has ruled out coaching and plans to enter the financial world. As he told Tennis365, "It's not in my plans to be a coach. When I stop, I want to work in a bank." This decision shows his desire to pursue a different path after his tennis career.

Monfils' Career Highlights

Despite suffering from injuries, Monfils has achieved a lot. He has won 12 titles, reached two Grand Slam semi-finals, and broke into the ATP's top 10 in 2016. His quickness and unique playing style have made him a fan favorite.

Many have wondered how much more he could have achieved if he had been able to play more aggressively. But his career has been marked by his resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

His achievements on the court have earned him a special place in tennis history and have made him a role model for young players.

Coaching Examples Among Retired Tennis Players

Unlike his former rival Andy Murray, who is now coaching Novak Djokovic, Monfils has no plans to go into coaching. However, there are many examples of retired tennis players who have successfully transitioned into coaching.

Boris Becker and Goran Ivansevic both coached Novak Djokovic and had very successful partnerships. Ivan Lendl coached Murray and played a crucial role in his career, helping him win three Grand Slams and two Olympic gold medals.

Monfils' compatriot Amélie Mauresmo also began coaching after her playing career ended. She worked with players like Victoria Azarenka and Marion Bartoli, guiding them to success. She also coached Murray and played a part in his success on clay.

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Jimmy Connors was brought back into the spotlight in 2006 when he coached Andy Roddick. He helped Roddick get back into the top 10 and reach the 2006 US Open final.

Monfils at UTS Grand Final

During the off-season, Monfils is competing in the UTS Grand Final in London. He made a promising start by defeating Andrey Rublev in his opening group match on Friday.

He won a tight first quarter 19-15, followed by cruising through quarters two and three 13-9 and 17-9. This is the same score by which he defeated the Russian at UTS New York in August.

Monfils said, "I came here, I was locked in, wanted to enjoy myself but I'm in the middle of pre-season, I've put a lot of work in to be at a decent level next year. Yes, I wanted to put on a show but be tough and I think I was tough today. I felt good on the court. I was moving well, and the ball felt good. There's always a period when your body lets you do what it wants, that's a bit easier. I felt like today was that day, I could run a bit better."
