2025-01-19

In an exhilarating display of skill and determination, the Georgia Tech women’s tennis team secured a 4-1 victory over Memphis at the Ken Byers Tennis Complex. The Yellow Jackets showcased their prowess by clinching the doubles point and three singles matches, enhancing their season record to 3-1. This win not only highlights the team's resilience but also sets a positive tone for their upcoming matches.

The match began with the doubles segment where Georgia Tech demonstrated exceptional teamwork. On court two, Kate Sharabura and Scarlett Nicholson turned the tables on their opponents, Alyssa Richter and Sofia Mykhalierts, by winning three consecutive games after trailing 4-3. Their perseverance led to a decisive 6-4 victory. Meanwhile, Alejandra Cruz and Given Roach secured the doubles point from court one. They broke through a 4-all deadlock against Emily Meyer and Leonie Moeller, ultimately prevailing 6-4. These victories set the stage for the singles competition.

Momentum carried into the singles play, where freshman Taly Licht continued her impressive form. She defeated Meyer in straight sets, taking the first set 6-3 and sealing the match with a 6-4 second set win. Cruz further solidified the lead by overcoming Richter in two sets. After a tightly contested first set that she won 7-5, Cruz dominated the second set with a commanding 6-1 victory. Despite Memphis securing a point on court one, it was Sharabura who sealed the deal for Georgia Tech. In a thrilling three-set battle against Mykhalierts, Sharabura claimed the opening set 6-3, lost the second 7-6 (4), but rebounded strongly to win the final set 6-3, bringing the match to a victorious close for the Yellow Jackets.

With this win, Georgia Tech heads to California for the ITA Kickoff Weekend at Pepperdine, ready to face Florida State in an ACC showdown. The team's performance against Memphis underscores their readiness for the challenges ahead. The players’ dedication and strategic play have positioned them well for future competitions, setting high expectations for their upcoming matches.
