The562's coverage of Long Beach Poly's girls' basketball journey is now sponsored by Bryson Financial. This year holds a special charm for the Long Beach Poly girls' team as they strive to meet their own high standards. In their season opener against Millikan on Friday night, 11 new varsity players made their Moore League debut and overcame initial challenges to secure a 60 - 25 victory.

Coach's Perspective and First Win

Poly coach Carl Buggs emphasized the significance of this moment for the new varsity players. "It's many of those girls' first ever varsity Moore League game, and they understand the standard they aim to uphold. It took them a while to get into their rhythm, even our veterans needed time. But we finally settled down. This was a good first win, a great start to get the kinks out. Now, we must prepare for the next game."

Offensive Rebounds and Momentum

The tip-off was delayed due to shot clock issues, affecting both teams' starts. However, Poly began to clean up the offensive glass, creating second - chance opportunities. Milia Misher's back - to - back layups in the quarter sparked a 7 - 0 Poly run. Coach Buggs highlighted the importance of offensive rebounds, saying, "Those rebounds gave us momentum. Some of our girls score well from put - backs. When we rebound effectively, the rest of the game falls into place as they feel more confident scoring in the paint from second - chance opportunities."

Fast - Break Layups and Team Play

Joy Anderson's fast - break layups continued to drive the Jackrabbits' pace in the second quarter. After being held scoreless in the first half, Anderson came on strong, finishing with a game - high 23 points. "Turning defense into offense is crucial," she stated. "Playing good defense and maintaining motion on offense will help us a lot this season. It's all about teamwork and converting defensive efforts into points."

Returning Players and Leadership

Anderson, one of just three returning players, is taking on a bigger role as a leader. "I feel I have to set an example, especially for the younger girls. They have little to no experience, so I need to show them how to play with passion. I also want to step up as I'm going to college next year and start playing at a higher level." Alongside Anderson, Nevaeh Lemons is also stepping into a significant role. She has become the primary ball handler, averaging almost 15 points per game this season after averaging just three last year. "Taking on this offensive load is a big change from last year, but I embrace the challenge. From coming in for spot minutes to leading the team, it gives me motivation. I want to build confidence for myself and the team."

Second - Half Performance

In the second half, Anderson and Lemons combined for 24 of the Jackrabbits' 31 points. Anderson scored 10 points in the fourth quarter alone. Misher and Ana Villamar also contributed five points each. For Millikan, Jeranay Roberson had a team - high seven points and Ky - lliyah Clardy added five.Poly will now gear up for their matchup at Lakewood on Thursday, while Millikan will face Jordan on Tuesday.
