Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr.'s Legal Troubles and Riding Career
2024-11-25
Jockey Ricardo Santana Jr. finds himself in a rather challenging situation as he serves a week-long jail sentence in Kentucky. This comes after pleading guilty to two serious charges of driving under the influence. The incidents occurred on November 19, 2023, and October 27, 2024, as reported by Bob Ehalt, Byron King, and Dick Downey of BloodHorse. His guilty plea was made on Tuesday, and he reported to the Shelby County Detention Center the very next day.

Legal Ramifications and Plea Agreement

In addition to the DUI charges, Santana was also charged with reckless driving in connection with the 2023 incident and leaving the scene of an accident in relation to the 2024 incident. However, these charges were dismissed under the plea agreement. This shows the complexity of his legal situation and the steps taken by the legal system.

Riding at Churchill Downs

Santana most recently rode at Churchill Downs on November 17. According to a Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Commission statement cited in the BloodHorse report, he passed a breathalyzer test before taking to the track. The KHRC is now reviewing the situation to determine when he can return to the saddle in the state. It's interesting to note that he is named on horses at Churchill Downs again starting Wednesday, with upcoming mounts including Dapper Moon in the Kentucky Jockey Club (G2). This shows his continued involvement in the racing world despite his legal setbacks.

Career Highlights and Statistics

With a riding career dating back to 2009, Santana has achieved remarkable success. He has amassed 1,966 wins in 12,350 starts and purse earnings of over $129 million. Some of his career highlights include wins in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Mitole and the 2020 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf with Fire At Will. This year alone, he has had 81 wins in 590 starts, including graded-stakes wins in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap (G3) with Skelly, the Noble Damsel (G3) with Ocean Club, and the Pocahontas (G3) with La Cara. These statistics speak volumes about his skill and talent as a jockey.
