Jonathan's Way Withdraws from Risen Star Stakes Due to Health Concerns
2025-02-14

Trainer Phil Bauer has announced the withdrawal of Jonathan’s Way from the upcoming Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds, citing health issues. The colt, who was initially set to compete this Saturday, showed signs of an unsatisfactory blood count, leading to the decision to scratch him from the race. This setback means that Jonathan’s Way will miss out on a crucial opportunity to earn points toward the Kentucky Derby 2025.

The Vekoma colt, owned by Rigney Racing, had been considered one of the top contenders for the Risen Star, with odds of 4-1 on the morning line. Despite his promising performance in previous races, including a win in the Iroquois Stakes (G3) and a second-place finish in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2), Jonathan’s Way has not raced so far in 2025. His last appearance was a seventh-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Training sessions at Fair Grounds since January, including impressive workouts, had raised hopes for a strong showing in the Risen Star.

The racing community remains optimistic about Jonathan’s Way’s future. While this setback is disappointing, it underscores the importance of prioritizing the health and well-being of equine athletes. Trainers and owners must always ensure that their horses are in peak condition before competing in high-stakes events. With proper care and time, Jonathan’s Way may still have opportunities to shine in other prestigious races ahead.
