Two notable athletes have decided to leave the Kansas football program and will no longer participate in the sport. The team's defensive lineup is experiencing changes as both players, who were set to enter their senior year, have chosen a different path forward.

The head coach, Lance Leipold, recently confirmed that cornerback Damarius McGhee and linebacker Tristian Fletcher are no longer part of the roster. "They will be completing their studies but are not expected to continue playing," Leipold shared after the team's initial spring practice session. He expressed appreciation for their contributions, noting that while they faced health challenges, both individuals demonstrated admirable character and work ethic throughout their time with the team.

McGhee initially joined KU through the transfer portal following an impressive freshman year at LSU. Despite being highly sought after by top programs such as Alabama and Georgia, he chose to start his college career with the Tigers. However, injuries hampered his progress at KU, limiting his playing time significantly during the past two seasons. His first season was cut short due to a back injury, and he only managed to play in six games before facing further setbacks.

Fletcher, on the other hand, came to KU from the junior college ranks prior to the 2022 season. Although he saw limited action on the field, participating in just three games each year, he contributed positively to the team's kickoff coverage unit. Unfortunately, a severe injury in the sixth week of last season ended his campaign prematurely, preventing him from making more substantial impacts.

Moving forward, the university community remains supportive of these young men as they focus on completing their education and exploring new opportunities beyond sports.
