Law Professor Leads 11-Horse Field in $150K Queens County
2024-12-18
John Holleman's Law Professor, a graded stakes-winning millionaire, is set to lead an 11-horse field in the Listed $150,000 Queens County on December 29 at Aqueduct Racetrack. After a break since October, this 6-year-old Constitution gelding is looking to shine again. Trained by Rob Atras, he was scratched from the Grade 2 Cigar Mile Handicap in favor of this event. Atras hopes their decision was the right one, considering the different race distances.

Law Professor's Return to Glory at Aqueduct

Law Professor's Recent Victories

This year, Law Professor has been on a winning streak, with 3 out of 4 starts resulting in victories. In February, he dominated a local one-mile tilt, earning a 100 Beyer. His last win on October 25 was a nose victory over multiple graded/group-placed Bendoog in a nine-furlong optional claiming tilt. He also has a perfect in-the-money record of 7-5-1-1 at Aqueduct, including wins in the Listed Excelsior last April and the Queens County last January. His strong performance in the 2022 Grade 1 Woodward, where he finished second to Life Is Good, further showcases his talent.

His Training and Temperament

Law Professor is a tricky horse to train and is very temperamental. However, since returning to Rob Atras' barn in early summer, he seems to have found his best stride. Atras believes he put it together in his last race and showed it on the track. Despite some issues with different surfaces and nervousness in the paddock, he seems to perform well at Aqueduct.

Opposition in the Queens County

Steep opposition will come from Jeffrey Drown's Tabeguache. Trained by Brad Cox, Tabeguache returned to the winner's circle last out with a determined nose victory over Winit. He has been a consistent colt, hitting the board in 6 out of 9 starts since his last win in the 2023 St. Louis Derby. Manny Franco will ride from post 11.FMQ Stables' Masmak, out of the graded stakes-placed Harlan's Holiday mare Nite in Rome, is looking to make it three in a row. Trained by Rick Dutrow, Jr., he has won both of his starts from off the pace and is expected to show a new dimension when stretching back out around two turns.Dual graded stakes-winners Instant Coffee, near-millionaire Repo Rocks, graded stakes-placed Film Star, multiple stakes-placed Quality Chic, allowance-winners Unlimitedpotential, Phileas Fogg, Curbstone, and the Panagiotis Synnefias-trained Surface to Air complete the field. The Queens County is Race 8 on the nine-race December 29 program, marking Closing Day of the Aqueduct fall meet.
