The third quarter of 2024 witnessed the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year declines in the racing-related equine fatality rate. Since the launch of HISA's anti-doping and medication control program on May 22, 2023, this downward trend has been consistent. In the third quarter alone, the fatality rate decreased by approximately 21%. Racetracks operating under HISA's rules reported 0.93 racing-related equine fatalities per 1,000 starts, in contrast to a rate of 1.18 in the third quarter of 2023. This significant reduction showcases the effectiveness of the implemented measures in safeguarding the well-being of these magnificent animals.
The aggregate year-to-date fatality rate for HISA racetracks, from January 1 to September 30, was 0.85 per 1,000 starts, representing a remarkable approximately 36% decrease from the previous year. Such consistent progress in reducing fatalities is a testament to the collective dedication and collaboration of all parties involved in the industry.
As of September 30, registrations through the HISA Portal reached approximately 35,500 covered persons across various categories. Additionally, there were 75,000 covered horses registered. This indicates a significant level of participation and engagement within the racing community, which is crucial for the continued growth and development of the sport.
The availability of a comprehensive registration system ensures that all participants and their horses are properly accounted for, facilitating better oversight and management of the racing activities. It also helps in maintaining the highest standards of safety and integrity within the industry.
In the third quarter, HISA completed six accreditation visits, bringing the total number of accreditation visits to 37 as of September 30. These visits to racetracks such as Downs at Albuquerque in New Mexico, Colonial Downs in Virginia, Ellis Park in Kentucky, Fresno California Racing Fair in California, Horseshoe Indianapolis in Indiana, and Monmouth Park in New Jersey demonstrate the authority's commitment to ensuring that all racetracks meet the necessary safety and integrity standards.
Accreditation plays a vital role in maintaining the credibility and reputation of the racing industry. By conducting regular visits and evaluations, HISA can identify areas for improvement and work with racetracks to implement necessary changes, thereby enhancing the overall safety and fairness of the races.
During the third quarter, an average of 7,500 veterinary treatment records were uploaded daily. Since the racetrack safety program's inception on July 1, 2022, the total number of records has reached 4 million. These records provide valuable insights into the health and well-being of the horses and enable veterinarians to monitor and address any potential issues promptly.
The availability of detailed veterinary treatment records helps in tracking the medical history of the horses and identifying any patterns or trends that may indicate underlying health problems. This information is crucial for ensuring the long-term health and welfare of the animals and for making informed decisions regarding their participation in races.
As the industry continues to work together to overcome challenges, HISA remains firmly committed to creating a safer racing ecosystem. To access the full third-quarter metrics report, click here.
