2025-02-11

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has announced the passing of its former chair, Joe Saumarez Smith. At 53, he left behind a rich legacy in horseracing after battling cancer since June 2023. His contributions to the sport, both nationally and internationally, have been widely recognized. The BHA expressed deep sorrow over his loss, emphasizing that he was one of the most influential figures in British racing over the past decade. His wife Wanda and children requested privacy during this challenging time.

A Life Dedicated to Horseracing

Joe Saumarez Smith's journey in horseracing began at an early age. His fascination with the sport started when he was just eight years old, sparked by a unique teaching method involving betting odds. By the age of twelve, he had attended his first race meeting and opened his first betting account. This early exposure laid the foundation for a lifelong passion and career dedicated to the sport.

Saumarez Smith joined the BHA as a non-executive director in December 2014. Over the years, he held several key positions, including chair of the Gambling Strategy Group and interim BHA chair. His extensive background in racing media and his involvement in various racing organizations made him a well-respected figure in the industry. He played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between the racing and betting industries, offering authoritative advice to the government and promoting British racing on the global stage.

Advocacy and Innovation in British Racing

During his tenure as BHA chair, Saumarez Smith spearheaded several initiatives aimed at enhancing the sport. One of his notable achievements was the launch of the HorsePWR campaign, which focused on improving horse welfare. Additionally, he initiated the creation of the Horseracing People Board (HIPB), aimed at exploring and improving the lives of those working in the industry. These efforts underscored his commitment to advancing all aspects of British racing.

His colleagues and peers acknowledged his unwavering dedication and wise counsel. Acting BHA chief executive Brant Dunshea praised Saumarez Smith for his invaluable support and guidance, while interim BHA chair David Jones highlighted his profound knowledge of the industry. Despite his illness, Saumarez Smith continued to advocate for British racing on the international front, earning him recognition and respect from peers like Lord Herbert of South Downs and Sir Francis Brooke. His nomination for honors this year further attests to his remarkable contributions to the sport.
