Michigan Hires Chip Lindsey as Offensive Coordinator (Reports)
2024-12-11
Michigan's coaching staff is in the midst of a crucial search for the next offensive coordinator. With the departure of Kirk Campbell and the need to shape the team's offense, they are looking to bring in a new leader.

Uncovering Michigan's Offensive Future

Chip Lindsey: The Front-Runner

North Carolina offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey appears to be a strong candidate for the Michigan job. With 26 years of coaching experience, he has worked with various teams and quarterbacks throughout his career. Last season at UNC, he coached Drake Maye, a highly regarded player. His extensive background in coaching quarterbacks gives him the expertise needed to shape Michigan's offense. He has held positions such as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Southern Miss, Arizona State, Auburn, Troy, UCF, and UNC. His diverse experience will bring a fresh perspective to the Michigan offense.

Moore fired Kirk Campbell after one season and began interviewing candidates immediately. He emphasized the need to find a coach who can build a balanced offense. Lindsey's track record suggests he has the skills to achieve this goal.

Michigan's offense has struggled in recent years, ranking 128th in total offense and 112th in scoring. Adding Lindsey could potentially boost the team's offensive performance and bring them closer to the top.

The Transfer Portal and Quarterback Search

The transfer portal opened on Monday, adding urgency to Michigan's search for an offensive coordinator. Moore plans to add a quarterback from the portal to strengthen the team.

Davis Warren, who made eight starts this season, has been in practice and they are discussing his fifth season. Alex Orji, who made three starts, could also return, along with Jadyn Davis, a freshman. Moore is transparent with his players and has informed them of the plan to look for a quarterback in the portal.

Michigan wants to add a veteran quarterback with experience, leadership, and the ability to play. They believe that a new quarterback could make a significant impact on the team's offense.

The Herbstreit Connection

Quarterback Chase Herbstreit, the son of former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN college football broadcaster Kirk Herbstreit, committed to Michigan last Sunday. He is the second quarterback in the class and had a successful career at St. Xavier.

Moore has had his eye on Herbstreit for a while and believes he can contribute to the team. His interactions with Kirk Herbstreit during the recruitment were similar to those with other parents.

Michigan is building a strong recruiting class, and Herbstreit's addition could add depth and talent to the quarterback position.

Michigan began practice this week for the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama on New Year's Eve in Tampa. Steve Casula, the tight ends coach, will call the plays in the bowl. The addition of a new offensive coordinator could bring a new energy and strategy to the team's performance in the bowl game.
