Unveiling the Stallion Journey of Last Samurai

Racing Prowess and Retirement

Last Samurai's racing career was nothing short of extraordinary. With a purchase price of $175,000 by the late Willis Horton, he amassed an outstanding 32: 6-5-4 record and earned a staggering $2,257,109. His victories came at the prestigious Oaklawn track, where he showcased his exceptional talent. In 2021, under trainer Dallas Stewart, he won the Poinsettia, and the following year, he claimed the Oaklawn Handicap (G2). In 2023, he added the Razorback Handicap (G3) and Essex Handicap (G3) to his list of achievements. These victories solidified his place among the top horses in the industry.

The Stallion Future

Now, as he enters retirement, Last Samurai is set to begin his stallion career at Lake Hamilton Equine, just west of Hot Springs. Owned by Randy Patterson, who also owns the nearby foaling facility Cedar Run Farm, Last Samurai's fee will be $2,000. The family of Willis Horton will retain ownership in the horse, ensuring his legacy continues. This move marks an important step in the horse's life, as he will now contribute to the future of the breed.

Recent Races and Challenges

This year, Last Samurai faced some challenges on the track. He was winless in four starts, including sixth-place finishes in the Oaklawn Mile (G3) and Oaklawn Handicap (G2) last spring in Hot Springs. His final start was a 10th-place finish in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup Stakes at Ellis Park on Aug. 4. Despite these setbacks, his past achievements cannot be overlooked, and his potential as a stallion remains high.
