The North Adams SteepleCats baseball team has appointed a new field manager, signaling a fresh chapter for the club. Mike Gladu, who has been the head coach at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) since 2016, takes over from Jack Cooney. This transition comes as Cooney had to step down due to his new role at Hamilton College, which conflicts with the NECBL season schedule. Gladu brings extensive experience in college baseball and a deep understanding of the league's demands. His appointment is expected to bring stability and competitive edge to the SteepleCats, setting the stage for an exciting upcoming season.
Gladu’s journey to this position has been marked by both anticipation and challenges. Last year, he was poised to manage the Pittsfield Suns but missed out when the team canceled its 2024 season due to issues at Wahconah Park. Despite this setback, Gladu’s resilience and dedication shone through as he stepped in as the interim manager for the Suns in 2023. This experience, coupled with his tenure at MCLA, where he earned Coach of the Year honors in 2017, positions him well for leading the SteepleCats.
Tommy Nowlan, the president of the SteepleCats, emphasized the importance of selecting a manager with proven experience. “We wanted someone who understands the nuances of this league and can navigate the complexities of building a competitive roster,” Nowlan explained. The team’s co-general managers, Dave and Nick Sacco, were equally impressed by Gladu’s track record and leadership style. Together, they believe that Gladu’s expertise will be invaluable as they finalize the roster for the 2025 season.
The 44-game NECBL season kicks off in early June, with the official schedule expected to be released by the end of February. Currently, the SteepleCats have 18 players committed to the roster, including returning veterans Nick Guachione and Matt Lussier. Among the new recruits are standout freshmen like Nick Brindle, who led Pittsfield High School to the state championship game in 2024. The majority of the players hail from Division I conferences, ensuring a high level of competition within the team.
Gladu’s approach to assembling the roster reflects his commitment to quality over quantity. He plans to keep some spots open for players who may emerge as strong candidates later in the spring. “It’s crucial to bring in players who can compete at this level,” Gladu noted. “We want individuals who are not only polished but also ready to grow and learn.” With the team aiming to reach a roster of 40 players, Gladu is eager to start making those critical calls and welcoming new talent to the SteepleCats family.
The SteepleCats’ future looks promising under Gladu’s leadership. His blend of experience, strategic thinking, and passion for the game promises to elevate the team’s performance. As preparations for the upcoming season intensify, fans can look forward to a competitive and thrilling summer of baseball in North Adams.
