A new development in user registration has emerged from OpenAI, allowing individuals to join the ChatGPT platform using only their phone numbers. This innovative approach was first observed by software engineer Tibor Blaho and is currently available in beta form within the United States and India. The initiative aims to reduce barriers to entry, making it easier for potential users to access ChatGPT's services without the need for an email address.
However, there are limitations associated with this simplified sign-up process. Accounts created via phone number cannot be upgraded to premium plans such as ChatGPT Plus or Pro until they have been verified through an email address. Additionally, multi-factor authentication is not supported for these accounts. Once a phone number has been used to create an account, it becomes ineligible for creating additional accounts. OpenAI warns that recycled or reused numbers may lead to errors, with no immediate solutions available until system updates in 2025. Furthermore, OpenAI has no immediate plans to expand this feature to other regions.
In its quest for expansion, OpenAI continues to explore ways to enhance user engagement. In December, the company introduced a free monthly chat service over the phone for U.S.-based users, limited to 15 minutes. Around the same time, ChatGPT became accessible via WhatsApp, albeit with restricted functionality. Despite boasting over 300 million weekly users, contributing significantly to the company’s revenue, OpenAI still faces financial challenges. Although projected to generate $3.7 billion in 2024, the company reportedly incurred a loss of around $5 billion in fiscal year 2024 due to various expenses. To address this, OpenAI is considering adjusting subscription prices and exploring usage-based pricing models.
The introduction of a phone-only sign-up method reflects OpenAI's commitment to innovation and accessibility. By continuously adapting its strategies, the company demonstrates its dedication to improving user experience while striving towards long-term profitability. These efforts underscore the importance of balancing growth with financial sustainability, ensuring a brighter future for both the company and its users.
