Post Time Set to Return in 2025, Eyeing Pegasus World Cup
2024-12-05
Post Time, the multiple graded-stakes winning millionaire owned by Hillwood Stable and trained by Brittany Russell, is set to make a comeback in 2025. With a recent second-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, this Frosted colt is eyeing the $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) on Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park as a potential season opener. Currently entered in Saturday’s Cigar Mile (G2) at Aqueduct, Post Time drew outermost Post 11 in a field that includes Grade 1 winners Señor Buscador, Book’em Danno, Locked and Mullikin.
Russell's Plans for Post Time's 2025 Season
"Post Time will run next year. I'm going to try to figure out what the schedule will look like," Russell said. "It's probably a little early to be thinking about the Breeders’ Cup right now, but looking at the year, I'll probably take a break at the beginning and then gear him up for the second part of the year. We'll see how he runs this weekend in the Cigar Mile. If he runs really big, we might continue on, but for now, we're just taking things one step at a time."The Pegasus World Cup and Its Importance
The 1 1/8-mile Pegasus World Cup for 4-year-olds and up is the highlight of World Cup day at Gulfstream Park, featuring eight stakes races, seven graded and two overnight handicaps. "It's on our radar. We'll see how he runs this weekend. If he performs well, we'll definitely consider entering the Pegasus," Russell said. "If we do the Pegasus in January, it would make sense to have a break in February and March. Saturday's Cigar Mile will give us a good indication of where he stands."Post Time's Past Racing Achievements
In his 14-career starts, Post Time has never been worse than third, with nine wins and $1,167,910 in purse earnings. He won Aqueduct's Carter (G2) and Laurel Park's General George (G3) over the winter and has placed in three Grade 1 stakes, including a second in the Metropolitan Handicap on June 8 and a third in the 1 1/8-mile Whitney on Aug. 3 at Saratoga. In the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, Post Time trailed the 13-horse field through four furlongs before making his familiar late run and coming within 1 1/2 lengths of the winner.Post Time's Performance in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile
Under regular rider Sheldon Russell, Post Time showed his tenacity and ability in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. Despite starting as the sixth betting choice at nearly 8-1 odds, he weaved through traffic and put up a strong fight. "It was an amazing experience. We were so proud of him and excited to see him perform on such a big stage. Even if he didn't win, the fact that he was in there and gave it his all was a testament to his character," Russell said. "I'd love to see him get a Grade 1 win. He truly deserves it."
