Beau Rugg, a football administrator for the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), revealed that discussions are underway regarding alterations to the playoff structure, including the possibility of scaling back from 16 to 12 teams qualifying in each region. This potential shift comes after a recent survey sent to school officials and coaches garnered over 1,000 responses, providing valuable insights into preferences for the sport's future format.
Since 2021, Ohio has operated with 16 teams per region advancing to the playoffs across seven divisions. However, Rugg highlighted that there is considerable support within the community for reducing this number to 12. He emphasized the importance of analyzing all available data before making any final decisions, ensuring that the needs of all stakeholders are met. The OHSAA plans to delve deeper into the survey results and engage in discussions with its Board of Directors, who will ultimately decide on any modifications to the current system.
Rugg stated that while there is no definitive timeline for when these changes might be announced, it is likely that further deliberations will occur during the board’s meeting in June, coinciding with the state baseball tournament. Historically, the OHSAA has experimented with different formats, expanding from eight teams per region in 1999 to the current 16-team setup implemented in 2021. These adjustments aim to enhance participation opportunities while maintaining competitive integrity.
In addition to potential playoff changes, the OHSAA recently released updates concerning divisional alignments for the 2025 season. Notably, Badin High School will transition to Division III due to enrollment figures, while Purcell Marian moves up to Division V and Cincinnati Country Day shifts to Division VII based on similar criteria. Competitive balance data plays a crucial role in determining these placements annually.
Looking ahead, preparations for the upcoming season have already commenced. Schools are allowed limited practice sessions without protective gear starting mid-May, followed by additional training days in July to ensure proper athlete acclimatization. Official practices begin in early August, leading into the regular season kickoff later that month.
