Sioux Falls is set to welcome a unique entertainment destination as The SandBar & Grill undergoes a transformation into Railbirds, an off-track betting venue. The venture is spearheaded by Tim Stupka, Rick McKinney, Eric Ward, and Eric Schofield, seasoned entrepreneurs with extensive experience in the off-track betting industry. They have acquired The SandBar, located at 2310 S. Marion Road in the Lake Lorraine development, from chef Josh Van Dyke, who will continue to oversee the kitchen operations. One of the standout features of Railbirds is its integration of food service, a rarity among off-track betting venues in Sioux Falls. Stupka envisions this combination as a significant draw, particularly during weekends when major races like the Kentucky Derby or Preakness take place.
Railbirds will not only serve as a betting hub but also as a social gathering spot. The restaurant is undergoing renovations to accommodate a spacious annex dedicated to off-track betting. Equipped with 23 televisions and 20 video lottery machines, the facility will be open Wednesday through Sunday, offering patrons a comfortable and immersive environment to enjoy live races from approximately 20 tracks each month. With no similar venues within a considerable distance, Stupka anticipates drawing visitors from nearby cities such as Brookings, Mitchell, and Watertown.
