Record-Breaking Sale at Magic Millions: Hunter Valley's Coolmore Stud Shines
2025-01-11

In a remarkable turn of events, the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale has witnessed unprecedented success, with records shattered consecutively over two days. A filly, offspring of Home Affairs and Sunlight, was sold for an astounding $3.2 million on Friday, surpassing the previous record set just a day earlier. Offered by Coolmore Stud in Hunter Valley, this sale marks a significant milestone in the Australian horse breeding industry, attracting international attention and solidifying the region’s reputation as a breeding hub.

The filly, born to multiple Group One-winning sire Home Affairs and the legendary race mare Sunlight, was auctioned off by Coolmore Stud located in Jerrys Plains. The buyer, renowned Japanese trainer Mitsu Nakauchida, flew in specifically for this purchase, outbidding several international contenders in a fierce competition. Nakauchida expressed his satisfaction with the filly's physical attributes and pedigree, stating that he is confident in her potential despite exceeding his budget. This acquisition not only reflects the high regard for Australian bloodlines but also highlights the growing interest from global trainers in purchasing horses from the region.

Coolmore Stud had anticipated significant interest in this particular filly, especially after acquiring Sunlight as a broodmare prospect in 2020. Tom Magnier, the head of Coolmore, emphasized the team's excitement over achieving such a historic sale. He noted that while it was challenging to predict the exact value, having a world-class trainer like Nakauchida involved validates their efforts. The filly is the third foal of Sunlight, whose previous colts were each sold for $1.4 million, further cementing her lineage's value.

Nakauchida, who has previously enjoyed success with Australian mares, plans to train the filly in Japan. His confidence in Australian bloodlines is bolstered by the performance of other horses he has trained, such as Liberty Island and Eri King. This latest acquisition aims to continue his winning streak, demonstrating the compatibility of Australian mares with Japanese stallions. The sale also underscores the global recognition of the Australian horse breeding industry, particularly the Hunter Valley, which has consistently produced top-tier horses.

The consecutive record-breaking sales highlight the exceptional quality of horses offered at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Barry Bowditch, managing director of Magic Millions, praised the involvement of international bidders, noting that it reflects the respect and admiration for the Australian breeding sector. The sale's Book One section grossed over $205 million with an 81% clearance rate, underscoring its significance in the global horse racing market. As the sale continues into Book Two, all eyes remain on the Hunter Valley, where history continues to be made.
