2024-11-23
Next Saturday at Churchill Downs, the road to the Kentucky Derby takes another significant step. The 1 1/16-mile Kentucky Jockey Club will feature a competitive field of 10 2-year-olds, with Jonathan’s Way, the winner of the Iroquois Stakes (G3), leading the pack. This race is part of the second annual stars of tomorrow program and offers qualifying points to the top five finishers, with a 10-5-3-2-1 scale determining their spots in the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby on May 3.

Key Races and Stakes

The 12-race program at Churchill Downs will see the Kentucky Jockey Club as race 11, with a post time of 5:48 p.m. EST. First post is at 1 p.m. The card also includes the $400,000 Golden Rod (G2) for fillies in race 9, which is part of the road to the Kentucky Oaks prep season. Additionally, there are the $225,000 Ed Brown in race 6 and the $225,000 Fern Creek in race 10.

Jonathan’s Way: A Promising Contender

Trained by Phil Bauer for Rigney Racing, Jonathan’s Way made a strong impression on the road to the Kentucky Derby with a commanding 2 3/4-length victory in the Iroquois in September. This earned him 10 qualifying points. However, in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, he finished a disappointing seventh after chasing a moderate early pace set by Citizen Bull. Jockey Joel Rosario, who was aboard for both the Iroquois and the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, will guide Jonathan’s Way from post 2 on Saturday. He will face tough competition from several other promising 2-year-olds, including He’s Not Joking (winner of the Grey Stakes (G3)), First Resort (runner-up in the Saratoga Special (G2)), and Filoso (third-place finisher in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1)).

Jonathan’s Way’s pedigree is also worth noting. Sired by Vekoma, he is an Ohio-bred colt with great potential. His performance in the Iroquois demonstrated his speed and ability to handle the track, and he will be looking to build on that success in the Kentucky Jockey Club.

Other Contenders to Watch

He’s Not Joking, winner of the Grey Stakes (G3), is another strong contender. Trained by Josie Carroll and ridden by Florent Geroux, he has shown consistent form and will be looking to make his mark in the Kentucky Jockey Club.First Resort, runner-up in the Saratoga Special (G2), is also in the field. Trained by Eoin G. Harty and ridden by Luis Saez, he has shown good speed and will be looking to improve on his previous performance.Filoso, third-place finisher in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1), is another horse to watch. Trained by Chad Summers and ridden by John R. Velazquez, he has the potential to perform well in the Kentucky Jockey Club.

These are just a few of the contenders in the Kentucky Jockey Club. Each horse has its own strengths and weaknesses, and the race is sure to be a thrilling display of speed and skill.
