San Diego Padres: 2024's Baseball America Organization of the Year
2024-12-09
Xander Bogaerts stood quietly in the tiny visiting clubhouse at Dodger Stadium as reporters gathered around. The finality of the Padres' Game 5 loss in the National League Division Series was just beginning to sink in as he and his teammates dressed for the bus ride back to Petco Park and into the offseason. They had envisioned going much further.

The Padres' Resilience in the Face of Adversity

Pre-Season Challenges and Decisions

Padres manager Bob Melvin's departure left a void as the team faced unexpected leadership changes. The 2023 season was a disappointment with the most expensive roster missing the postseason and losing their TV deal. To stay competitive, trading Juan Soto became a necessary step to slash payroll. The Padres began their roster overhaul at the Winter Meetings, targeting the Yankees to address various holes.Righthander Michael King's transition to a full-time starter was crucial, finishing the 2024 season with a 2.95 ERA and 201 strikeouts. Righthanders Randy Vasquez and Jhony Brito also played important roles. Career backup catcher Kyle Higashioka had a career-high 17 homers and started every postseason game.

Mid-Season Surges and Key Additions

In early May, Preller made a significant trade for first baseman Luis Arraez, including 2023 first-rounder Dillon Head and Arizona Fall League MVP Jakob Marsee. Arraez won a third straight batting title and represented the Padres in the All-Star Game.Jackson Merrill's move from shortstop to center field was a success. He paired 24 home runs with key late hits, having a rare five fWAR season at 21. The Padres surged to an MLB-best 43-20 record after the all-star break, with contributions from minor league deals for David Peralta, Donovan Solano, and Tyler Wade. Waiver claim Jeremiah Estrada established himself in the bullpen with an MLB-record 13 strikeouts in a row. Matt Waldron fronted the rotation depth.

Postseason Prowess and Future Hopes

Preller transformed the bullpen into a postseason weapon. Top pitching prospect Dylan Lesko led a deal for two-plus years of the Rays' Jason Adam as a setup man in front of Robert Suarez. Robby Snelling and Adam Mazur were added to acquire Marlins all-star closer Tanner Scott. The 2025 Padres will face challenges with Musgrove's Tommy John surgery wiping out his season and free agent departures. But a foundation is in place with Machado and Merrill winning Silver Slugger awards and Merrill finishing as the NL Rookie of the Year runner-up. Darvish's 1.98 ERA in 12.2 postseason innings showed he still has plenty left. King and Cease are on the rise, and Tatis' big-stage heroics reminded the world of his potential."I don't expect this to be a one-off," said Shildt. "I firmly expect this group to come back and be ready for consecutive playoff runs for two, three, four years. That will be historic in San Diego baseball history." Added Tatis: "We have a strong core over here. Man, the sky's the limit, and I have no doubt we're gonna be knocking on the door every single year. And (I) can't wait."
