The Pleasant Plains girls basketball team has found a unique advantage in having multiple sets of sisters playing together. This dynamic not only adds a fun and competitive atmosphere but also enhances their camaraderie and performance on the court. Recently, the Cardinals demonstrated their prowess with a decisive 63-34 victory over Pittsfield, setting them up as the top seed for the upcoming Sangamon County girls basketball tournament.
The presence of siblings on the team fosters an environment where players can challenge each other while maintaining strong relationships. Older sisters take on mentorship roles, guiding their younger counterparts both on and off the court. This setup helps develop leadership and communication skills among the veterans, while the younger players bring fresh energy and enthusiasm to practices.
For instance, junior point guard Bailey Leach plays alongside her younger sister Jada, who has made a significant impact since joining the team. Emma Sabatka, the younger sister of junior guard Grace Sabatka, has also brought a spark to practices. The sisters' friendly competition pushes everyone to perform better. "We get competitive with each other," Emma Sabatka said, "but it’s always in a fun way, and we never take it personally." This balance between competition and camaraderie creates a positive and motivating practice environment.
The bond among the players extends far beyond basketball. Many of the girls participate in other sports together, such as volleyball and soccer, and even spend time outside of athletics studying or going on vacations. This close-knit relationship strengthens their teamwork and unity. "Even at practice, we’re always having a laugh," Bailey Leach noted, highlighting the lighthearted yet supportive atmosphere within the team.
Jada Leach, known for her infectious smile and positive attitude, brings joy to every practice. Her ability to uplift her teammates during intense moments has become invaluable. "I like seeing other people happy," Jada explained. "So if I’m happy, it makes other people happy too." This mindset contributes to a cohesive and enjoyable team environment, which ultimately benefits their performance on the court.
The upcoming Sangamon County tournament will be a testament to the strength of this sisterhood. With several returning all-tournament players, including Bailey Leach and Anna Weber, the Cardinals are well-prepared to defend their title and showcase the power of family and teamwork.
